25  to 28  of June

Our ancestral rhythm: akbal-kan-chicchan-cimi (night-seed-serpent-death). The moon will be waning between aries and bull.

It will essentially be a time of retreat between the team and the group of residents registered for the Festival, in the waters and rocks within the limits of the Chapada Diamantina National Park.

We will investigate DANCE STATES particularly from the perspective of ENTREMUNDO, research with audiovisual, dance and altered states of perception.

There will be a lot of work in the Nau garden to support the necessary structure for our dwelling in these days there and  there will also be plenty of time and space for contemplation.

And there will be time to check out our travel maps under a Mayan reality and dream game.

And contemplate sky.

29  and  30  of June

Our ancestral rhythm: manik-lamat (star hand). Last days of the waning moon (balsamic moon), between bull and twins.

This is a time to meet the rural community of Matão. They offer us endless hospitality and friendliness, we learn about their family farming and hear stories of the beauty and harshness of rural life.

We co-created a Festa de São João with the community, recreating games from June festivities, such as the tree-em-pé and the pau-de-fita.

The clown Carmela (Iris Fiorelli) will have the party with the children, there will be a Cineclube in the countryside!

And a beautiful walk to Pedra do Cruzeiro.

2) Artist-Researcher in Residence

3) Artistic-educational actions open to the public

supporter

You can be an EmComTato Festival SUPPORTER with CASH DONATION  or MATERIAL DONATION.

The EmComTato Festival is an event that dares to move across poetic and social borders. We found in Palmeiras and its countryside an intense and challenging stimulus for this. While we are also afraid of confronting the wealth of these people and places, we are faced with material want - or an idea of socially learned "poverty" -  in addition to the very common socio-political neglect (often perversity) aimed at the backlands, suburbs and minorities in Brazil. There is also the difficulty in touching the artist community and the public interested in art festivals, for this type of socio-aesthetic proposal, a proposal that seeks to avoid the many structural forms of consumerism that guide our lives. For these reasons, your financial or material support is immensely relevant to this Festival!

cash donation

You can choose between:

The)  Scholarship for artist-researcher in residence.

Donated amounts will be allocated to a balance for distribution as a participation grant. In this case, criteria will be established by the Festival, considering the demand.

b) Solidarity Christmas.

Donated amounts will be destined to an event produced annually by rural community leaders in Palmeiras to hold a Christmas party  with order fulfillment (letters) and distribution of gifts to children in the region.

c) Nau's infrastructure.

Amounts donated will be destined to the continuous construction and maintenance of the infrastructure of Nau, our garden of utopias in Volta da Serra, which anchors the immersive period of the team and   resident artists at the EmComTato Festival.

material donation

You can choose between:

a) June festival in the village of Matão.

Material for decoration and characteristic costumes (cheetah fabric) and for June toys (ribbon stick, standing tree, square dance...)

b) Gifts for solidarity Christmas.

Mainly toys, but also school supplies and children's clothing. Letters with requests from the children are collected and you can then meet specific requests from these children and help make your Christmas dream come true.

c) Poor infrastructure of the Festival.

canvas to provide  Floor or ceiling dancing anywhere are always welcome. Tatami mats too. We also need a good and light sound equipment for the actions in the villages. Certainly a lot of other things you  imagine, to arrive with art in the countryside.

Fill out the form here and make your donation!

You choose whether your donation will appear tagged or anonymous in our online supporters report.

Why Palmeiras?

that the images  of the III EmComTato Festival - the first held in Palmeiras, in 2013 -  can explain to us! See on the side at 7  chapters, the documentary we made in that  year. And on our youtube channel  so many extras and poetic records  specially chosen to be an irresistible invitation. Visit  also ours  Instagram right here on the site !

Each edition of the EmComTato Festival - the first two held in Salvador and from  third edition in Palmeiras - brought the maturation of a concept to the event that bets on "meeting with others"  beyond skin contact and weight interaction  that Contact Improvisation provides. We also touch the social skin that so much for us  identifies how much  reveals otherness. We share weights to cross these borders with a simultaneously sensitive and reflective eye.

Testimony: Liana Gesteira (PE)

My first encounter with EmComTato was in the second edition, in 2012, held in Salvador. There I began my trajectory of immersion in the practice of Contact Improvisation, and that is why this festival has become something special in my experience, as it brought contours and understandings of this way of moving in the world that I still cultivate in my dance today.

In 2013 I participated in the III EmComTato, which was held in the city of Palmeiras. There I found a unique way of conducting a festival, which was concerned with expanding the practice of Contact Improvisation to the city's inhabitants, with immersion movements in classes and also in terms of relationship with the community that hosted the event. I danced with children, with rivers, with the Sunday market, with the sound of birds, with the full moon. A pulsating and regenerating experience of ways to inhabit a space. Building a plurality of possibilities for improvised paths in the body and in the world.

In 2017 I participate in the IV EmComTato as a practitioner and as a member of the team. And this whole understanding of dancing with the city, with space and with otherness expands. It was a more intense meeting with the community and its residents. We move together with children at school, with people attending CAPES, with the Matão community, with dogs, streets, gardens, stones, stars. Seeking ways to be with me, developing my personal practices in classes and experiences, but also creating spaces for relationship and exchange of knowledge with Palmeiras and their daily lives.

We experimented with setting up a schedule that is delineated in time, together with the group of participants and attentive to what was also coming to us from the inhabitants of Palmeiras. This way of working sometimes brings discomfort, due to the constant presence of the unpredictable, not knowing exactly what activity will happen every two days, but it also exercises us in the place of presence and listening, in an understanding to build together with the participants and with the city. And this way enables other ways to organize knowledge, because it is not known a priori, but knowledge is sought through the encounter.

This is the tone that EmComTato seems to pursue, a festival that brings provocations to move in the present and with what is not known. Even more, to do it every day, looking into the eyes of those who live in the city of Palmeiras.

For me, EmComTato is a festival created in community, which takes place at the Encontro com Comunidade de Palmeiras. For this it is necessary to understand that the delivery is made in time, a time that is not the place I live, but the place I visit. This way of working raises insecurity, vulnerabilities, because it constantly puts us in the face of not knowing. But it is precisely an investigation of practicing with not knowing can be transformed into joint knowledge. After all, the insecurity of what I don't know is the power to learn from the other. The following question of this experience remained in me: What is knowing or not knowing in a dance? Is what moves me what I know or what I don't know?

And it is this body open to the encounter, to the unknown, that seems to be interesting to investigate in EmComTato, bringing together practitioners interested in co-creation, in also being involved in the realization of this event, in jointly creating personal and common experience. A moment to experience shared walks of knowledge, without needing to know beforehand where we are going to arrive, but with the restlessness of moving paths to come.
